Bernardini, Henny Hughes retired to stud

Bernardini, who ran second in the Breeders' Cup Classic - Powered by Dodge (gr. I), and Henny Hughes, who ran last in the TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I), have been retired and will stand at Sheikh Mohammed's Darley at Jonabell near Lexington.

Bernardini, a 3-year-old colt by A.P. Indy, retires with six wins in eight starts, all this year, while Henny Hughes, a 3-year-old colt by Hennessy, won six of 10 races at 2 and 3.

Winner of six straight races including the Preakness (gr. I), Travers (gr. I), and Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I), Bernardini will stand for $100,000.

Bernardini was beaten by a length in the Classic by Invasor, who is owned by Sheikh Mohammed's brother, Sheikh Hamdan, in the name of his Shadwell.

Henny Hughes, whose victories included the King's Bishop (gr. I) and Vosburgh (gr. I), will stand for $40,000.

"These are the supreme Thoroughbreds of their generation and each bested older horses, too," Dan Pride of Darley said. "They are well-bred and exceptionally attractive. They were not only brilliant but they came back for more time and again. We couldn't be more thrilled than to have the chance to stand them."

Darley also announced that leading freshman sire Street Cry, whose son Street Sense, won the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I), will have his fee raised to $50,000. However, those who bred to him during his first four seasons at stud may send an approved mare to the stallion in 2007 for $30,000.
