Termagant is as short as 10-1 with William Hill for the Stanjames.com 1,000 Guineas after showing up the leading lights of the Ballydoyle and Godolphin powerhouses with victory in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.
The Aidan O'Brien-trained Lillie Langtry, sent-off the 8-11 favourite, and Godolphin's Long Lashes, a 5-2 chance, were fancied to cement their Classic claims but never really got going as the 16-1 winner scored in smart fashion from 66-1 outsider Famous, who led in the early part of the race.
Winning trainer Kevin Prendergast, who hinted Termagant could be a more likely candidate for the Irish 1,000 Guineas rather than Newmarket's Classic, said: "I was very concernedabout the ground, but she handled it well. There are no plans as such and that might be it for the season."
Johnny Murtagh, who rode Lillie Langtry, added: "I knew she wasn't going to win from three out. You have to put it down to the ground, it was very heavy."
