Foot abscess keeps Allegre out of BC Turf

Jump to Race Entries/Results ARCADIA, Calif. - A foot abscess will prevent the longshot Allegre from starting in Saturday's $3 million Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita.

The scratch of Allegre was announced on Thursday afternoon. Trainer Brian Koriner said the setback will keep Allegre out of training "for a couple of weeks."

"It's a big, ugly abscess," Koriner said. "We tried to cover it up [with a shoe]. We didn't want to take a chance if he couldn't train 100 percent sound."

Owned by Brewer Racing Stable and Eagle Oak Ranch, Allegre would have been the outsider in the BC Turf. A 4year-old colt, Allegre has won 5 of 11 starts, including two minor stakes on turf at Turf Paradise last spring. The BC Turf would have been his graded stakes debut.

* Cherokee Heaven, a long shot in the BC Turf Sprint, was withdrawn on Thursday. He ran in Thursday's seventh race, an optional claimer, finishing third.

Race Comments: CONDUIT (IRE) settled outside a rival then three deep through the stretch the first time, chased alongside a foe on the backstretch, split horses leaving the second turn, was bumped and forced out some into the stretch, bid alongside the runner-up in the drive, gained the lead under urging in deep stretch and gamely prevailed. PRESIOUS PASSION sped to the early lead, opened up sizeable advantage off the rail, angled in nearing the second turn, fought back along the fence through the stretch and continued willingly to the wire. DAR RE MI (GB) angled in and chased inside, moved up on the second turn, came out and bumped with the winner into the stretch, continued toward the rail in the drive and bested the others. SPANISH MOON pulled his way along to chase the leader just off the rail then outside a rival, was three deep leaving the second turn, came out into the stretch and lacked the needed late kick. RED ROCKS (IRE) saved ground chasing the pace, came out in upper stretch and could not summon the necessary response. MONZANTE settled outside then alongside a rival, split horses leaving the second turn, came out some in the stretch and did not rally. TELLING chased inside then came off the rail, continued outside a rival on the backstretch and into the second turn, was three wide a quarter mile out, angled in some into the stretch and had little left for the drive. Rail on hill at zero.
