Zenyatta second in voting for AP Female Athlete of the Year

Undefeated champion mare Zenyatta finished second in the voting for top female athlete of 2009 by the Associated Press.

Tennis star Serena Williams was voted top female athlete. BlackBerry Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Rachel Alexandra finished seventh in the voting.

“It’s been an unprecedented year for our sport with not one, but two females distinguishing themselves as all-time greats,” said Alex Waldrop, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association’s president and chief executive officer. “Their historic campaigns transcended horse racing and captured the attention of sports fans around the world. I’m eager to see which Thoroughbred will be voted Horse of the Year at the Eclipse Awards on January 18.”
