City of Light moved from a pair of second-place finishes in allowance-level races into stakes company starting last December and promptly strung together a three-race win streak, all in graded events.
Trainer Michael McCarthy liked what he saw in those allowance races enough to throw the Quality Road colt into the deep end in the Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita the day after Christmas.
"This horse has a lot of natural ability,” said McCarthy of the $710,000 auction purchase. “I've had a lot of faith in this horse from the first day I saw him at Keeneland as a September yearling. He's a big horse and it took him a while to come to himself. When a horse is doing good, you gotta go. ... You gotta take a shot. With a horse like this, who's got a lot of natural speed, you let him go ahead and showcase it."
City of Light made his 2018 debut in the Triple Bend Stakes at his home base, and proved his Malibu victory was no fluke, scoring by a length and a half.
Stretching out to two turns for the first time in the Oaklawn Handicap, City of Light had a ding-dong battle with veteran Accelerate, but emerged with a neck victory.
City of Light became the first Grade 1 winner for breeder Ann Marie Farm near Paris, KY, which is owned by Noreen O'Neill. A lifelong fan, O'Neill and her late husband Ted bought the former Mandysland Farm in 1994. The property is also the birthplace of leading sire Unbridled's Song.
