In the final race of his career, Goldencents returned to the scene of his greatest triumph and became the first horse to win the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile in consecutive years with his repeat victory at Santa Anita in 2014. It was a gutsy 1 1/4 length win for the 4-year-old colt, who had to duel for the early lead and rebuff a stretch challenge from runner-up Tapiture. Signaling his readiness for a defense of his title, Goldencents set a seven-furlong track record of 1:20.99 winning the Pat O'Brien Stakes at Del Mar in August. He then finished second to Hong Kong-based Breeders' Cup Sprint contender Rich Tapestry in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship. Earlier in the year, Goldencents finished second in the Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar in July and the Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park in June. A model of class and consistency in his three years on track, Goldencents began his career with a winning debut as a juvenile and went on to establish himself as a leading 2013 Kentucky Derby contender with a victory in the Santa Anita Derby. Owned by W. C. Racing and bred by Rosecrest Farm & Karyn Pirrello, the son of Into Mischief was retired following the Dirt Mile to stand alongside his sire at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky.
