One of the greatest stars in Breeders’ Cup history made her first appearance against males in the 2008 Mile as a 3-year-old, and she quickly lived up to her European reviews. Goldikova, the magnificent Irish bred for owners Alain and Gerard Wertheimer, received a perfectly timed ride from Olivier Peslier and split horses in the stretch to outfinish defending champion Kip Deville by 1 1/4 lengths on the grass at Santa Anita. Freddy Head, who won two Breeders’ Cup races as a jockey with another great filly miler named Miesque, won his first Cup start as a trainer with the $1.80-1 favorite Goldikova in the 25th edition of the $2 million race. The daughter of Anabaa covered the mile in 1:33,40 on the heels of a stunning victory at Longchamps in Paris in the Prix du Moulin in early September. A 14-time Group 1 winner in her career, “Goldy” would return the Santa Anita the following year and repeated as the Mile winner. In 2010 at Churchill Downs, she made history by winning the Mile for an unprecedented third time. She tried for a “fourpeat” in 2011, but wound up third at Churchill Downs. Still, no other horse has ever won three Breeders’ Cup races.
