There may not have been another 2014 Breeders' Cup contender with a more illustrious family than Take Charge Brandi. The D. Wayne Lukas trainee, sired by Giant's Causeway, is a filly out of the Seeking the Gold mare Charming, a daughter of Take Charge Lady. A three-time Breeders' Cup contender, Take Charge Lady was the 2014 Broodmare of the Year as the dam of champion 3-year-old colt Will Take Charge and graded stakes winner Take Charge Indy. With such a winning pedigree, owner Willis Horton gambled on Take Charge Brandi as a yearling, purchasing the filly for $435,000 at the 2013 Keeneland September Sale. She began her career in his colors with a winning debut at Churchill Downs in June, and followed up with a second in the Schuylerville Stakes at Saratoga. Her next three efforts, all in graded stakes, were not successes, and Take Charge Brandi went to post in the 14 Hands Winery Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at 62-1, the longest shot in the field of 12. Her front-running half-length win was confirmation for Lukas that a change in his approach to training the filly had been a wise decision. "[Lukas] just told me to let her run and I did that," said rider Victor Espinoza after the race. Her victory was also the sixth win in the Juvenile Fillies for the Hall of Fame trainer, and his 20th, a record, in the Breeders' Cup.
