Pleasantly Perfect’s dominant victory in the 2003 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park is remembered as much because of his trainer Richard Mandella as for the horse himself. The triumph was an unprecedented fourth of the afternoon in a Breeders’ Cup race for Mandella, a feat unlikely to be matched. Pleasantly Perfect solidified his place among the greatest racehorses on the planet when he captured the Group 1 Dubai World Cup in the United Arab Emirates the following year. He added to his laurels by winning the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar before checking in third in the 2004 Classic at Lone Star Park in his final career start at age six. He won half of his 18 lifetime starts and his earnings of $7.8-million rank him among the all-time leaders. His legacy lives on with a parade of top shelf offspring including 2010 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Shared Account.
