Skywalker

Breeders’ Cup Champion
Jockey:
L. Pincay Jr.
Trainer:
M. Whittingham
Owner:
Oak Cliff Stable
Breeder:
Oak Cliff Thoroughbreds Ltd.

Oak Cliff Stable’s 4-year-old Skywalker was a 10-to-1 chance in the Classic with most of the attention focused on more accomplished stars Precisionist and Turkoman as the favorites. However, Skywalker made a pre-emptive move to open a big margin in the far turn under Laffit Pincay, Jr. and held a safe margin throughout the stretch to score by 1 1/4 lengths over the late-closing Turkoman.

A son of Relaunch named for the famous ‘Star Wars’ character, Skywalker made news the year before winning the Santa Anita Derby before chasing Spend A Buck home sixth in the Kentucky Derby. Trained by Michael Whittingham, son and former assistant to Hall of Fame horseman Charlie Whittingham Skywalker took a somewhat unusual route to the Classic, shipping to Seattle to win the Longacres Mile and finishing third (placed second) in the Frank Kilroe, Jr. Mile on turf at Santa Anita in last two starts before Breeders’ Cup.
