A rising star in the training ranks was the story of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf as 31-year-old New Yorker Chad Brown saddled his first runner and found the winner’s circle in the race’s inaugural edition with a 2-year-old daughter of Sahm named Maram. Ridden by Jose Lezcano, Maram covered the mile in 1:35.15 and eluded bettors at odds of more than 11-1. Maram was the only horse owned by the partnership of Karen Woods and Saud bin Khaled.
The Juvenile Fillies Turf was only the second career start for Maram, who won the Miss Grillo at Belmont in her prep for the Cup. Brown went out on his own after saddling Ginger Punch for trainer Bobby Frankel to win the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Distaff.
