Dismissed as the longest proposition at 37-1, Dakota Phone roared from last place in a field of 12 to catch Morning Line at the wire and win the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile by a head at Churchill Downs in the 2010 Championships. Dakota Phone, who also defeated 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird in the Dirt Mile, gave trainer Jerry Hollendorfer his initial Breeders’ Cup victory and provided jockey Joel Rosario with his second victory in the Championships.

A winner at four tracks in his career, Dakota Phone posted his initial victory in his seventh start on July 13, 2008 at Hollywood Park. In addition to his Breeders’ Cup victory, Dakota Phone also won the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap in 2010 at Del Mar.
