Breeders’ Cup Champion
Jockey:
J. Leparoux
Trainer:
M. Maker
Owner:
Kenneth L. and Sarah K Ramsey
Breeder:
Catherine Wills

Owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey were familiar to Breeders’ Cup fans through the accomplishments of Kitten’s Joy, Roses and May and others over the years, but it would be Furthest Land, a horse they claimed for $35,000, that would bring them their first Breeders’ Cup Championship victory in the Dirt Mile of 2009.

Ridden by Julien Leparoux for trainer Mike Maker, Furthest Land was sent off a 21-to-1 longshot and held off 24-to-1 longshot Ready’s Echo charging at the finish by three-quarters of a length with Midshipman another head back in third after setting the pace. A 4-year-old gelding by Smart Strike, Furthest Land was claimed a little over a year before out of a turf sprint at Belmont Park and came into the Breeders’ Cup after capturing the Kentucky Cup Classic on Polytrack at Turfway Park.
