Answer Lively stalked the early pace in the Juvenile before taking command in upper stretch and then held on to edge 76-1 longshot Aly’s Alley by a head to give trainer Bobby Barnett a Breeders’ Cup victory with his first Championships starter. The victory represented the lone Championships triumph for owner-breeders John Franks.
Ridden by Jerry Bailey, Answer Lively provided the Hall of Fame rider with the second of his three Breeders’ Cup Juvenile victories and seventh Championships victory of 15 overall. Among the 12 rivals he defeated was Lemon Drop Kid, who would go on to win the 1999 Belmont Stakes. Answer Lively also won the Sport of Kings Futurity at Louisiana Downs and placed second in the Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland en route to earning the Eclipse Award as champion juvenile of 1998.
