Mr. & Mrs. M. L. Wood

Favorite Trick was so sensational in 1997 that he became the first two-year-old since Secretariat in 1972 to be named Horse of the Year, Thoroughbred racing’s highest honor. He capped his perfect record of eight victories that year by sailing to a 5 1/2-length triumph in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Hollywood Park as the betting choice. Racing for Joseph LaCombe, the dark bay colt was trained by the relatively unknown Pat Byrne, whose stellar Breeders’ Cup afternoon included Countess Diana’s victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Prior to the Juvenile, Favorite Trick won important races at premiere tracks like Churchill Downs and Saratoga Race Course and with a different trainer the following year, Favorite Trick continued to be competitive in racing’s biggest races and even raced in the Kentucky Derby.
