Ten years before the 1996 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Capote defeated eventual Horse of the Year Alysheba in this race. Now it was the year to see if Boston Harbor could emulate his quick sire. Trained by D. Wayne Lukas, Boston Harbor won his first race and then captured the Grade 3 Bashford Manor at Churchill Downs. He finished a distant second in Saratoga’s Grade 3 Sanford and Lukas decided to return to Kentucky to ready him for the Breeders’ Cup.
He reeled off three straight stakes wins there, with the last two at the Juvenile distance of 1 1/16 miles. At Woodbine he shot to the lead and set a strong pace with four pursuers hot on his heels. Jockey Jerry Bailey let him loose around the turn and took a three length lead. With a furlong left Acceptable came on with a rush, but Boston Harbor fought him off tenaciously in the final yards and would not be denied a championship while holding on by a neck.
