Is It True

Breeders’ Cup Champion
Jockey:
L. Pincay Jr.
Trainer:
D. Lukas
Owner:
Eugene V. Klein
Breeder:
Warner L. Jones Jr.

All eyes were on Ogden Phipps’ flashy chestnut colt Easy Goer going into the 1988 Juvenile, sent off the prohibitive 3-to-10 favorite in the field of 10, but Eugene Klein’s Is It True was prominent from the start and coasted to the wire 1 1/4 lengths clear of Easy Goer at the finish as the favorite was obviously struggling and uncomfortable with the Churchill surface labeled ‘muddy.’

Is It True gave trainer D. Wayne Lukas his third Breeders’ Cup victory of the afternoon and ninth overall following Gulch in the Sprint and Open Mind in the Juvenile Fillies. A son of Raja Baba, Is It True was sent off a 9-to-1 chance under Laffit Pincay, Jr. after chasing Easy Goer in three previous meetings in New York, the most recent Easy Goer’s four-length romp in the Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park with Is It True second. Voters decided on Easy Goer as Eclipse champion.
