A rough inside trip under jockey Rafael Bejarano went to a photo finish before Ginger Punch, a 4-year-old daughter of 1998 Classic winner Awesome Again, prevailed by a neck over Hystericalady in the 2007 Distaff on a sloppy track at Monmouth Park. The victory was Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel’s sixth and final Breeders’ Cup victory. He died in 2009.
Frankel convinced owner Frank Stronach to put up a $180,000 supplemental entry fee, and it appeared the move was ill-fated when the track came up sloppy, but Ginger Punch was all courage in a spirited stretch run as the co-favorite at $4.50-1 in a highly competitive field of 12. She earned $1.2 million for Stronach’s gamble.
Ginger Punch won five stakes in 2008 and returned to the Distaff (renamed the Ladies’ Classic), but ran into the amazing Zenyatta and finished fourth before being retired. While in foal to Bernardini, she was sold to Japanese interests and moved overseas.
