The only favorite to win at Gulfstream Park in the sixth Breeders’ Cup Championships, Bayakoa won the Distaff by 1 1/2 lengths for her first of two victories in the Distaff. She returned to win the 1990 Distaff at Belmont Park. Bayakoa’s victory was the first in the Championships for Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally and represented the fifth of seven Breeders’ Cup victories for Hall of Fame jockey Laffit Pincay Jr.
Bayakoa started her career in her native Argentina and made her U.S. debut with a victory on May 11, 1988 at Hollywood Park. In addition to her two Breeders’ Cup victories, Bayakoa posted 10 other Grade 1 victories in the United States. Bayakoa was inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in 1998.
