With 50 yards to the finish of the Distaff on the ‘sloppy’ track, Personal Ensign appeared to have little chance of over-taking Kentucky Derby winner Winning Colors on the rail with the lead, but reached in the closing strides to put her nose in front at the wire with regular rider Randy Romero aboard, preserving her perfect career record in what many veteran observers consider the greatest Breeders’ Cup race ever run.

Trained by Shug McGaughey, Ogden Phipps’ Personal Ensign was the likely favorite when pre-entered for the Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita two years before, but broke a pastern in her final workout at Belmont Park before shipping to California. Successful surgery allowed the remarkable daughter of Phipps’ stallion Private Account to return for a limited campaign of four wins in four starts as a 3-year-old in 1987. Personal Ensign went on to win all seven starts as a 4-year-old in 1988 to finish her career 13-for-13, earning her well-deserved Eclipse Award title and into history acclaimed among the greatest fillies or mares of all time.
