Blocked behind a wall of horses on the far turn, victory looked beyond grasp for In the Wings (GB) in the Breeders' Cup Turf. But Hall of Fame rider Gary Stevens, who knew he was sitting on one of Europe's most accomplished runners, patiently threaded through a talented field, and edged away in the final strides to win. It was the first Breeders' Cup victory for trainer Andre Fabre, a perennial leading trainer in France.
Bred and owned by Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum, the bay colt finished a solid fourth in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe three weeks earlier. Before that, he scored impressive victories in the Group 1 Coronation Cup at Epsom Downs in England, and the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, in France. The triumph in the Breeders' Cup Turf was the last race of his career. In the Wings retired with seven victories in 11 starts.
