Trying grass for the first time, Prized turned back 13 rivals to win the 1989 Breeders’ Cup Turf by a head at Gulfstream Park. Prized provided Hall of Fame jockey Eddie Delahoussaye with his second of seven Breeders’ Cup victories and gave Hall of Fame trainer Neil Drysdale his third Championships victory.
Prized claimed his first victory in his third race on Dec. 7, 1988 at Calder. Following a third-place finish in the Tropical Park Derby at Calder, Prized shipped to the West Coast for a campaign that included a victory over eventual Horse of the Year Sunday Silence in the Grade 2 Swaps Stakes. In 1990, Prized remained on the turf to win the Grade 3 Arcadia Handicap and Grade 1 San Luis Rey Stakes at Santa Anita.
