Breeders’ Cup Champion
Jockey:
J. Santos
Trainer:
L. Jolley
Owner:
Bradley M. Shannon
Breeder:
E M JR

Bradley (Mike) Shannon’s 3-year-old colt Manila was sent off at odds of nearly 9-to-1 in the Turf despite having posted five consecutive turf stakes wins for trainer Leroy Jolley, but rallied for a hard-fought neck victory under jockey Jose Santos with Theatrical second, champion filly Estrapade third and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe hero Dancing Brave fourth as the 1-to-2 favorite.

A Kentucky-bred son of Lyphard, Manila was purchased privately early that year and found his best stride racing on turf, sweeping to major victories in the United Nations Handicap at Atlantic City, Ballantine Stakes at Meadowlands and Turf Classic at Belmont Park. Manila was voted champion turf horse of 1986.
