Thor's Echo

Thor's Echo

Breeders’ Cup Champion
Jockey:
C. Nakatani
Trainer:
D. O'Neill

Only one California-bred horse had ever won a Breeders’ Cup race before Thor’s Echo, never far from the front, took the lead after a half-mile and surged to a four-length victory in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, by far the biggest win of his career. Trained at the time by Doug O’Neill, Thor’s Echo had won only three of 16 races, and none in a graded stakes, before his breakthrough performance in the Sprint.

Thor’s Echo maintained that momentum in his subsequent start, a three-quarter length victory as the favorite in the Grade 1 DeFrancis Memorial Dash, cementing his Eclipse Award as champion sprinter. Sold following his 4-year-old season to Sheikh Rashid of Dubai, Thor’s Echo was winless in his final 10 starts, running fourth in the Grade 2 True North and Grade 2 A.G. Vanderbilt, before being retired with five wins and nearly $2.5 million from 28 lifetime starts.
