The high point of Kona Gold’s long career was his triumph in the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Sprint in track record time at Churchill Downs. The performance, which came after he had been third in the 1998 Sprint at Churchill Downs and second in the 1999 Sprint at Gulfstream Park, earned him the Eclipse Award as champion sprinter, but the gelding’s racing career was far from finished. He competed in the Sprint again in 2001 and 2003 and was still competitive in the upper echelon at age nine before retiring with 14 wins in 30 starts and earnings of nearly $2.3 million. He remained at the track as a mascot at his trainer Bruce Headley’s barn before being relocated to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington where the public could visit him.
