Gulch

Breeders’ Cup Champion
Jockey:
A. Cordero Jr.
Trainer:
D. Lukas
Owner:
Peter M. Brant
Breeder:
Peter M. Brant

A third start in the Breeders’ Cup was the charm for Peter Brant’s Gulch as the well-bred son of Mr. Prospector rallied to a three-quarters length victory over Canadian champion Play the King over the ‘sloppy’ track with Angel Cordero, Jr.

Gulch was developed and trained at ages two and three by Leroy Jolley, finishing fifth in the Juvenile at Santa Anita in 1986 as the second choice, and had a bad day at Hollywood Park in 1987 when checking in ninth behind Kentucky Derby heroes Ferdinand and Alysheba in the Classic.

Gulch had some good days at longer distances with a major victory going a mile in the 1987 Metropolitan Handicap and second in the Whitney Handicap at Saratoga in 1987 and 1988. Gulch was voted Eclipse champion sprinter in the wake of his victory in the Sprint.
