Artie Schiller declaring he liked the turf by winning his 6 furlong debut at Belmont Park while rallying from 10th to be first at the wire. He stretched out as a 3-year-old winning three graded turf races at 1 1/8 miles, but faltered as the favorite in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Mile when being steadied on both turns at Lone Star Park.
He was favored in his first five starts of 2005 winning two Grade 2 events and was never more than a half-length of capturing his other graded test leading to the Mile. On Breeders’ Cup Day at Belmont Park, Leroidesanimaux (BRX) was the horse to beat with consecutive graded stakes scores at Santa Anita, Saratoga and Woodbine. New jockey Garrett Gomez, aboard Artie Schiller, wisely tracked the top three pacesetters along the hedge and split rivals to outlast champion Leroidesanimaux by a half- length.
