Ridgewood Pearl came into the 1995 Breeders’ Cup Mile with a reputation as one of the most quality runners Europe had to offer that season. A British-bred filly with Irish connections, she had won five times in Group Stakes in England, France and Ireland from seven lifetime starts. Lightly raced by North American standards, she started as the slight favorite over the soft greensward of Belmont Park.
With Irishman John Murtagh in the saddle, Ridgewood Pearl fought the rider a bit early and then settled in fourth behind the likes of accomplished Fourstarallstar. They boldly made their way past the leaders with her long and powerful strides. It became a two-horse race with Fastness in midstretch as they separated from the field, but Ridgewood Pearl gained momentum and pulled away to a 2 length margin of victory in her final career start.
