Barathea made only two starts in North America and both were in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. In 1993 at Santa Anita Park, he faced the top two turf horses in the country. He ran fifth behind the sensational Lure and Paradise Creek while compromising his chances by running very wide and bearing out on the first turn. Trainer Luca Cumani was determined to win this race and trained Barathea the following months on a course in England designed with the same turns as Churchill Downs. Cumani’s perseverance paid off.
After winning one of five Group races in England and France, Barathea returned to the U.S. to face Lure, who was going for his third straight win in the Mile. Jockey Frankie Dettori hugged the turns with Barathea and pulled away by three lengths while setting a new course record of 1:34.5. It was the first Breeders’ Cup win for Dettori and the final lifetime start for the regally-bred Barathea.
