Despite a rough trip, Steinlen emerged from the pack to win the sixth running of the Breeders’ Cup Mile by three-quarters of a length at Gulfstream Park. Second in the Mile the previous year, Steinlen gave jockey Jose Santos his third of seven Championships victories and D. Wayne Lukas his 10th Breeders’ Cup triumph. Steinlen won the 1989 Eclipse Award as champion turf male.
After beginning his career in Europe, Steinlen made his U.S. debut Oct. 30, 1987 at Santa Anita and posted his initial U.S. win in his fourth start at Santa Anita on March 26, 1988. When his career ended with a fourth-place finish in the 1990 Breeders’ Cup Mile, Steinlen had won 12 graded stakes in North America with additional Grade 1 scores in the 1989 Arlington Million and Bernard Baruch plus the 1990 Hollywood Turf Handicap.
