Royal Heroine (IRE)

Breeders’ Cup Champion
Jockey:
F. Toro
Trainer:
J. Gosden
Owner:
Robert E. Sangster
Breeder:
B. Liam Ryan

Robert Sangster’s Irish-bred filly Royal Heroine was an established star early in her career in England and France and sealed an Eclipse Award campaign based in California as a 4-year-old for trainer John Gosden winning the first Breeders’ Cup Mile, defeating a strong field of international and American male rivals as the favorite under jockey Fernando Toro.

Winner of the prestigious Prix de l’Opera on Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Day at Longchamp in early October of 1983, Royal Heroine was already proven against top class against male rivals prior to the Breeders’ Cup with a victory over colts in her American debut in the Hollywood Derby in late 1983. Royal Heroine confirmed that form with an outstanding effort finishing second to legendary John Henry in the Arlington Million. The daughter of Lypheor closed out her marvelous career winning the Matriarch Stakes at Hollywood a month after the Breeders’ Cup.
