Storm Flag Flying

Breeders’ Cup Champion
Jockey:
J. Velazquez
Trainer:
C. McGaughey III
Owner:
Ogden Mills Phipps
Breeder:
Phipps Stable

Unbeatable at 2, the daughter of Storm Cat won all four of her races in her debut season, three of them stakes, each one a Grade 1 – the Matron and Frizette at Belmont Park, and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Arlington Park – to earn the juvenile filly championship for owner Ogden Phipps and trainer Claude “Shug” McGaughey. Winless in two starts at 3, Storm Flag Flying came back as a 4-year-old in 2004 to hit the board in all eight of her races, three of them wins, including two stakes: the Grade 2 Shuvee at Belmont and the Grade 1 Personal Ensign at Saratoga Race Course.

In the Personal Ensign, Storm Flag Flying avenged a loss earlier at the summer meet to 2002 Horse of the Year Azeri, coming from behind the catch the favored champion mare in deep stretch and pull clear to a 1 ¼-length victory.
