Trailing by six lengths at mid-stretch, Epitome uncorked a dramatic rally under Hall of Fame rider Pat Day to put her nose on the finish line just ahead of Jeanne Jones in the fourth running of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Hollywood Park. For Day, it was the third of his 12 Breeders’ Cup victories and the triumph secured the Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old filly for Epitome. Epitome gave trainer Phil Hauswald his lone victory in the Championships.
It took five starts for Epitome to get her initial victory, that coming at Keeneland on Oct. 13, 1987. Prior to her Breeders’ Cup victory, Epitome won the Pocahontas at Churchill Downs. During her career, Epitome won races at four tracks.
