Groupie Doll became the first horse to win the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint twice.
The 5-year-old homebred mare, foaled and raised on the Indian Ridge Farm in Frankfort, Ky., of co-owner, co-breeder and trainer Buff Bradley and his father, Fred, won the 7 furlong race in both 2012 and 2013 at Santa Anita Park.
In 2012, Groupie Doll, under jockey Rajiv Maragh, was dominant in the Filly & Mare Sprint. Sent away at 3-5, Groupie Doll swept past Dust and Diamonds at the eighth pole and powered home a winner by 4 1/2 lengths. She won five races that year and was later named Champion Female Sprinter of 2012.
Groupie Doll made just three starts before defending her Breeders’ Cup title in 2013, beginning in August by winning the Presque Isle Masters (G2), and finishing third in two other graded Stakes, including the Thoroughbred Club of America at Keeneland . But the chestnut daughter of Bowman’s Band put it all together on Breeders’ Cup Saturday one month later, facing 11 rivals as the 3-1 favorite. Breaking from the 11 post, Maragh guided her to the lead turning for home, speeding to a two length advantage before holding off Judy the Beauty by a half-length at the wire. Four days later Groupie Doll was sold to Mandy Pope at the Keeneland November for $3.1 million. Two months later, Groupie Doll was named Champion Female Sprinter of 2013.
