Main Sequence began his racing career as a juvenile in 2011 with a string of four wins in England. And then he lost 10 races in a row. It wasn't until the 5-year-old Aldebaran gelding was shipped to the U.S. and placed in trainer H. Graham Motion's barn for owner and breeder Flaxman Holdings Ltd. that his record would turn around. Making his first start since October 2013, Main Sequence won his first race in two years and earned guaranteed entry into the Breeders' Cup Turf when he scored in the United Nations Stakes at Monmouth Park in July.
The United Nations would be the beginning of a new four-race winning streak. Main Sequence went on to victory in the Sword Dancer Invitational Stakes at Saratoga in August and the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Belmont Park in October, capping his 2014 campaign with a half-length victory in the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf over Flintshire, second in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe three weeks before.
His win in the Turf is the second for Motion, who won his first Breeders' Cup race with Better Talk Now in the 2004 Turf. In addition to Karakontie's win in the Breeders' Cup Mile, it also earned Flaxman Holdings Ltd. the 2014 John Deere Award for Outstanding Breeder.
