In 2013, Beholder became just the second horse to win two different Breeders’ Cup races.
Following her one-length victory at 4-1 in the 2012 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies under jockey Garrett Gomez at Santa Anita Park, Spendthrift Farm's Beholder, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Henny Hughes, embarked on a 3-year-old campaign, which featured back to back victories in the Las Virgenes (G1) and the Santa Anita Oaks (G1) before running second by a half-length to Princess of Sylmar in the Kentucky Oaks (G1).
Trainer Richard Mandella rested Beholder until the late summer where she returned at Del Mar to win the Torrey Pines Stakes by 2 ½ lengths under new rider Gary Stevens, who again rode her to victory in the Zenyatta Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita.
In the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, Beholder faced one of the toughest fields ever assembled, including two-time defending Distaff champion Royal Delta and Kentucky Oaks winner Princess of Sylmar. But they were no match for Beholder on this day. Under a relaxed pace around the backstretch Stevens forged Beholder to the front, taking the lead with 3/16 of mile remaining and powering home to a 4 ¼ length victory. Beholder joined Zenyatta, who won the Distaff (then Ladies’ Classic) in 2008 and the Classic in 2009, as the only horses to win two different Breeders’ Cup races.
The next day Secret Circle would become the third horse to win two different Breeders’ Cup races.
