Tepin

Breeders’ Cup Champion
Jockey:
Julien R. Leparoux
Trainer:
Mark E. Casse
Owner:
Robert E. Masterson

Going into the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Mile, Tepin had put together a solid season. In her final prep, she motored through Keeneland’s soft turf en route to a seven-length tally in the First Lady Stakes (G1) Oct 3. Trained by Mark Casse, the 4-year-old Bernstein filly had four wins and a pair of seconds in six starts. That record included her June 6 score in the Just a Game Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park and a nose defeat in Saratoga’s Diana Stakes (G1) July 25.

Greater things awaited as she stepped into the starting gate on October 31. Off from post seven in a 12-horse field for the $2 million Mile under jockey Julien Leparoux, Tepin (5-1) stayed just off the pace set by Obviously (IRE) through the first half-mile in 48:08. Sensing that she was ready to roll, Leparoux eased her to the front at the quarter pole and she opened effortlessly to a three-length lead in the stretch before the roar of 55,000 fans at Keeneland. Tepin hit the line 2 ¼ lengths in front of Mondialiste, stopping the clock in 1:36.69 over a good turf course.

"To be in the same company with Goldikova (IRE), Miesque, and Royal Heroine (GB) — beating the boys in the Mile — I'm not sure I have the words," Casse said. "Am I dreaming? She just continues to amaze me."

Tepin became the sixth female to win the Mile, joining Royal Heroine (1984); Miesque (1987,’88); Ridgewood Pearl (IRE) (1995); Six Perfections (FR) (2003); and Goldikova (2008-’10).

"I told everyone that she was the best filly in the country and she proved it today," owner Robert Masterson said in the winner’s circle. "She's great. She's a Breeders' Cup champion and she deserves it."

Robert Masterson purchased Tepin at Fasig-Tipton’s Saratoga yearling sale for $140,000.

In January of 2016, Tepin of was named Champion Turf Female by the Eclipse Awards voters. But she was far from finished. Tepin took to the world stage as a 5-year-old. After two wins at Tampa Bay Downs in the winter of 2016, she was sent to Royal Ascot to face males a second time in the Queen Anne Stakes (G1), and despite a very soft course, prevailed over Europe’s top milers.
