Stormy Liberal

It was “Miller times two” on Championship Saturday 2017 as Rockingham Ranch’s Stormy Liberal wore down stablemate Richard’s Boy – both trained by Peter Miller - in the final 30 yards to win the 10th running of the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) for 3-year-olds and up by a half-length on Championship Saturday at Del Mar racetrack.

Stormy Liberal, 30-1, was ridden by Joel Rosario. A 5-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Stormy Atlantic, Stormy Liberal covered the five furlongs on a firm turf course in :54.75. The Turf Sprint was Stormy Liberal’s first start in nearly five months, since finishing eighth in the Jaipur Stakes at Belmont Park on June 10.

The victory was the first in the Breeders’ Cup for Miller. It was the sixth Breeders’ Cup victory for Rosario and second in the Turf Sprint. His previous victory in the came on Bobby’s Kitten in 2014 at Santa Anita.

“I’m just elated to win a Breeders’ Cup at home,” said a jubilant Peter Miller afterward. “It’s just amazing. The first win I’ve ever had, I thought we had home court advantage and they ran to that. Richard’s Boy ran his butt off. I couldn’t be prouder of these horses. They’re just two gutsy, tough, hard-knocking horses.”

“He broke well and I asked him a little to get my spot,” said Rosario. “They were going very fast in front. But I listened to Peter. He said to stay inside and save some ground then make my run. I did that and it worked out perfect. He really was there for me. He did all the work.”

Stormy Liberal’s Turf Sprint win was his eighth in 22 career starts, and his fifth in seven starts in 2017. Gary Hartunian of Rockingham Ranch claimed Stormy Liberal for $40,000 from trainer Doug O’Neill in October of 2016. With Peter Miller now the trainer turning into the new year, Stormy Liberal reeled off four straight 6 ½-furlong grass stakes victories at Santa Anita during the first half 2017, including the Daytona Stakes (G3) on May 27. After losing the Jaipur in June, Miller decided to rest his hard knocking gelding, who was obviously very keen when he returned for the Breeders’ Cup.
