SireSea The Stars (IRE)
Zelzal will be making his North American debut in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. He has made all but one of his previous career starts in his native France where he was considered a potential super star after winning four of his first five starts last year.
He campaigns for Al Shaqab Racing, the stable name of Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani. The operation has had a steady string of upper level horses, including 2013 European Horse of the Year Treve. Al Shaqab purchased Zelzal for $229,680 as a yearling at the Arqana sale in Deauville, France.
Al Shaqab has had four previous Breeders’ Cup starters, including Osaila (Ire) third in the 2014 Juvenile Fillies Turf and Mshawish, fourth in the 2015 Mile. In partnership, they were eighth in last year’s Mile with Ectot (GB).
Zelzal is trained by Jean-Claude Rouget, whose stable is based in Pau in southwestern France. He obtained his license in 1978 and is among Europe’s all-time leading trainers.
