LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 26, 2014) – The Breeders’ Cup has today announced that legendary guitarist Richie Sambora will sing and perform the national anthem for the 2014 Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, November 1. Airing live on NBC Sports’ telecast of the Breeders’ Cup, Richie’s performance will include a special charity component this year for City of Hope, offering one lucky fan a race-day experience and signed guitar from the rocker icon and Hall of Fame songwriter.
Giving an edgy, Hollywood twist to the horseracing tradition of the pre-race national anthem performance, the rocker’s much-anticipated return to the Winner’s Circle and vocal debut at the Breeders’ Cup follows his history-making performance of the “Call to the Post” anthem at last year’s event.
To celebrate this year’s 31st running of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, Richie has designed a one-of-a-kind custom handmade Kantor Austrian crystal guitar, which he will use to perform the national anthem before donating it to the lucky CharityBuzz auction winner. The winning bidder will also receive two VIP tickets to the World Championships for Friday, October 31st and Saturday, November 1st and do a meet and greet with Richie while personally joining him in the Winner’s Circle for the special performance.
The CharityBuzz auction will officially launch on September 26th and end on October 14th with all proceeds from the auction being donated to City of Hope, the Breeders’ Cup’s primary non-profit beneficiary.
