    2 Trends to Know for Betting Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs

    The Breeders’ Cup World Championships in November will be held at Churchill Downs for the ninth time, thirty years after making its first appearance at the Louisville track and seven years since its latest swing through Derby City. When examining a list of past winners of the original seven Breeders’ Cup events that have been held at Churchill Downs, one notable aspect has been the tendency of the primary turf events, the Mile (G1) and the 1 1/2-mile Turf (G1), to produce minor-to-major upsets. Although the sample size of eight previous runnings held at Churchill is a small one, the recognizing of this emerging trend should be enough to convince handicappers to take a broader look at the two races once final fields are drawn.

    2-year-old filly Skitter Skatter became the first horse to earn an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) and 3-year-old Havana Grey (GB) went wire-to-wire to win the $418,142 Derrinstown Stud Flying Five (G1) and gained a free berth into the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint.

    Unhurried until the final furlong, Peter Brant's Fog of War sliced his way through the traffic just in time to get up for the win in Sunday's Grade 1, $250,000 Summer Stakes at Woodbine. The Summer is a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” event, with Fog of War receiving an automatic berth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Churchill Downs on Friday, November 2.

    Natalma and the Boys of Summer

    Fourteen fillies will contest the Natalma, so-named for the dam of the breed-shaping Northern Dancer. In the Summer Stakes, a field of thirteen colts and geldings has been drawn. Both races offer a purse of $250,000 and are a mile in distance, the same length as their corresponding Breeders’ Cup contests, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and Juvenile Fillies Turf.
