LOS ANGELES (November 7, 2012)— Yogi Berra’s “it was déjà vu all over again” was never truer than during the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge at Santa Anita on Saturday. Defending champion Patrick McGoey staged another improbable last race comeback to defeat last year's 2nd place finisher Christian Hellmers to win the tournament and $255,341.
LOS ANGELES (Nov. 7, 2012)- Beating out a field of 750 contestants, Irish-born Gemma Hassett and Chino Hills resident Mike Tippett were named winners of the second annual “Fascinators and Fedoras” Fashion Event, presented by Westfield Mall and Los Angeles Magazine, at the 29th Breeders’ Cup World Championships. Hassett, donning a fire orange Fiona Mangan fascinator, and Tippitt, sporting a cowboy-hat inspired fedora, both took home a $5,000 Westfield Mall gift card.
Trainer Ian Wilkes plans to give Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) winner Fort Larned a break after his taxing effort Nov. 3 and is hoping to return to Santa Anita Park next fall for the 30th World Championships in 2013 .Wilkes made his comments the morning after the 4-year-old Fort Larned scored a front-running victory in the $5 million event."He is going to get a little break and then go to Gulfstream for the winter," Wilkes said.
Fort Larned led from gate to wire and held off a sustained stretch bid by Mucho Macho Man to win the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic.
Morton Fink's Wise Dan squarely put himself in the mix for a variety of championships this year with a superior course-record victory in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park Nov. 3.
