Today Breeders’ Cup, Thoroughbred horseracing’s most prestigious international event, and Coolhaus, the premium dessert company recognized by their creative take on the ice cream sandwich, announced a partnership for the 2016 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, taking place on November 4th and 5th at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, CA.

The fabulous European filly Found, who won last year’s BC Turf and captured the Arc earlier this month, is among the 17 horses pre-entered for the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 5 at Santa Anita Park, where she will make her first appearance on dirt. Though she is also pre-entered in the BC Turf, the first preference listed by trainer Aidan O’Brien was the BC Classic, where she will face no less of a rival than 2016 Dubai World Cup and 2014 Kentucky Derby/Preakness winner California Chrome on a surface new to her but where the former Horse of the Year owns four graded stakes wins.

Led by North America’s all-time leading money earner CALIFORNIA CHROME, two-time Breeders’ Cup champion mare BEHOLDER, Travers Stakes winner ARROGATE, defending champions TEPIN and FOUND (IRE) and Kentucky Derby (G1) winner NYQUIST, an all-star international cast of 185 of the world’s best Thoroughbreds, including 38 from overseas, have been pre-entered for the 2016 Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

There might only be nine fillies and mares pre-entered in the $2 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, but to understand how much of a blockbuster the race should be, consider this: Beholder, a three-time Eclipse Award champion and two-time Breeders’ Cup winner, figures to be the third choice in the wagering, even though she has been no higher than 2-5 in her last nine starts against females.

One of the big questions on Nov. 5 involves whether Syndergaard can go the distance. And sorry, New York Mets fans, we’re not talking about ace pitcher Noah Syndergaard hurling all nine innings in Game 7 of the World Series. Instead that date marks a crucial test for Syndergaard, the fleet 2-year-old colt trained by seven-time Eclipse Award winner Todd Pletcher who will try to stretch his speed around two turns for the first time in the Sentient Jet $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita Park.

Look over the list of past winners of the Breeders’ Cup Mile and you’ll see an impressive list of European stars. Goldikova won it three times and Miesque twice. Spinning World and Royal Academy prevailed once. So in the aftermath of Tepin’s initial loss of 2016 in the Grade 1 First Lady Stakes at Keeneland, it should come as no surprise that the European contingent for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile will be vigorously scrutinized by handicappers.

It’s good to be Aidan O’Brien these days. Not only do you have one of the world’s best stables that includes the winner of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, but you recently became the first trainer to send out the top three finishers in that most famous and coveted of European races. Then, when the Breeders’ Cup rolls around, you can take the filly who won the Arc as well as last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf, make the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic her first preference and still have a formidable hand in the $4 million turf race at the World Championships.

Five horses that have garnered much of the major headlines throughout the season – California Chrome, Flintshire, Lady Eli, Songbird, and Tepin – figure to be the favorites in their respective Breeders’ Cup races. While victories by all would be no surprise, history and the nature of the game suggest even the seemingly unbeatable can be vulnerable in the right circumstances.
