There’s something about the fall that brings out the best in Stephanie’s Kitten and on a cool, final day of October she rallied from last and then fended off a late bid by hard-luck European Legatissimo to take the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf.
It was the second Breeders’ Cup victory for Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s homebred 6-year-old mare, who won the 2011 BC Juvenile Filly Turf. She was also second in last year’s BC Filly and Mare Turf.
“She's tough, I'll tell you,” Brown said. “Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey deserve a lot of credit because they had a chance to sell her last year and they bought her back and raced her as a 6-year-old, which isn't a popular thing to do. They were rewarded today. She won here today just six miles from where she was born and raised and I am so happy for them.”
Stephanie’s Kitten, coming off her second straight win in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl, was sent off at 7-1 under jockey Irad Ortiz and paid $17.60 to win.
Multiple Group 1 winner Legatissimo, the 4-5 favorite, stumbled badly coming out of the gate and raced wide on the final turn while settling for second.
Another European, Queens Jewel, was third.
