Liam's Map arrived at the Breeders' Cup with a reputation for brilliant front-running speed after setting the pace and finishing second in the Whitney, then winning the Woodward wire-to-wire at Saratoga. He proved himself more versatile when, after breaking a beat slow and finding himself behind horses in the early going, he scored a come-from-behind victory in the $1 million Las Vegas Dirt Mile.
Still fifth at the three-quarters mark, and four lengths off the leader, Lea, Liam's Map was forced to rally wide as the field turned into the stretch, giving him and jockey Javier Castellano a chance to surge into the lead. He finished the mile in 1:34.55, 2 1/2 lengths ahead of Lea. Red Vine was another 3 1/4 lengths back in third.
A 4-year-old Unbridled's Song colt, Liam's Map is trained by Todd Pletcher for owners Teresa Viola Racing Stables and West Point Thoroughbreds.
