Runhappy stated his case for an Eclipse Award as the champion sprinter by showing a new dimension as he rallied in the stretch to pass Private Zone and record a three-quarters of a length triumph in the $1.5 million Twin Spires Breeders’ Cup Sprint.
Coming off front-running wins in the Grade 1 King’s Bishop at Saratoga and Phoenix at Keeneland, Runhappy stalked in third before closing quickly under Edgar Prado in the final furlong to give 32-year-old trainer Maria Borell her first Breeders’ Cup win.
“Unbelievable, unreal,” Borell replied when asked about her emotions after the race. “A thousand things I probably can’t put into words.”
Owned by James “Mattress Mac” McIngvale, Runhappy was sent off as an 8-5 favorite and paid $5.20 to win in giving his owner his first Breeders’ Cup victory.
Favorite Tale was third.
