THE 1990 BREEDERS’ CUP

Belmont Park

October 27 & 27, 1990

The first Breeders’ Cup ever at Belmont Park in New York was a day marked by tragedy and triumph.  In the Distaff, the champion filly Go for Wand fell in the stretch against defending Distaff winner Bayakoa, and could not be saved. Just one race later, legendary English jockey Lester Piggott rode Royal Academy to victory in the Mile.  In the Breeders’ Cup Classic, Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled broke from the outside post in a 14 horse field and passed all of his rivals to win the Classic by a length. It was the third career Classic win for jockey Pat Day.
