THE 2004 BREEDERS’ CUP

Lone Star Park

October 30 & 30, 2004

The Breeders’ Cup came to Texas for the first time at Lone Star Park in suburban Dallas. The trainer and jockey combination of Todd Pletcher and John Velazquez won two races, first with Ashado in the Distaff and then Speightstown in the Sprint. Ouija Board in the Filly and Mare Turf and Wilko in Juvenile provided Europe with Breeders’ Cup wins. The 5-year-old gelding Better Talk Now was an upset winner of the Turf at 27-1. The 4-year-old Ghostzapper capped off the day with a brilliant performance in the Classic, winning it wire-to -wire for jockey Javier Castellano and trainer Bobby Frankel. The victory earned Ghostzapper the Horse of the Year crown.
