The $250,000 Just a Game Stakes (G1) has a small but wickedly talented field of seven, with Beau Recall looking to avenge last year’s second place finish. The one-mile turf race takes place on Saturday at Belmont Park.
A 10-1 shot for the 2020 running, Beau Recall (Ire) drew the rail. The Sir Prancealot daughter was 2 ¼ lengths behind Rushing Fall in this spot last year, then immediately bounced back to win the Yellow Ribbon (G2) at Del Mar and finish second in the Rodeo Drive (G1) at Santa Anita. She was off from September 28 until May 30 at Churchill Downs, when she finished ninth at 7-1 in the Mint Julep (G3).
Despite her poor placing, Beau Recall was only beaten just over two lengths in a blanket finish after a rough stretch drive, and trainer Brad Cox has given the Slam Dunk Racing runner a half-mile work over the course on June 21. Jose Ortiz will be aboard; the pair won a stakes at the Fair Grounds in 2019.
No matter her form, Beau Recall will have a tough go in facing the revitalized Newspaperofrecord (Ire). The 8-5 favorite for Chad Brown was unstoppable as a juvenile, winning three straight by open lengths including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1). She was not able to win in 2019, running second twice in Grade 3 company and then ninth in the Belmont Oaks (G1) over this course last year. She was off from July 6 until June 6, 2020, when she romped to victory in the Intercontinental (G3) over seven furlongs with a career-best speed figure. Irad Ortiz, Jr. will be aboard the daughter of Lope de Vega (Ire).
Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) winner Uni was a star last year, winning three of four after going unbeaten in 2018. She defeated fellow entrant Got Stormy and a field of males in the November 2 Mile at Santa Anita, and will have regular pilot Joel Rosario back aboard. The six-year-old daughter of More Than ready has had four local works to prepare for this spot after spending the winter in Florida. She has won seven of eight at the distance
Got Stormy, second to Uni as the favorite in the Breeders’ Cup has drawn Post 2. The daughter of Get Stormy has earned $1.5 million for owner Gary Barber and trainer Mark Casse. She won the Matriarch (G1) at Del Mar in December, then finished second in the Frank E Kilroe (G1) at Santa Anita in a field of males, but she has also been frustrating, running fourth in a pair of Grade 3 stakes this year including the Beaugay at Belmont last out. She gets a new rider in Luis Saez.
Zofelle (Ire), Regal Glory, and Valedictorian complete the field. Wager on racing from Belmont at TVG.com.
