It seems that trainer Chad Brown has such a stranglehold on grass racing in North America that it may come as a surprise that he has never won the $1 million Ricoh Woodbine Mile at Woodbine Racetrack outside Toronto, Canada.
The race has recently been won by such stars as World Approval, Tepin, and Wise Dan, and this year features the filly Got Stormy, favored at 8-5 on the morning line.
Brown brings in two runners, including 3-1 second choice Raging Bull (FR). The son of Dark Angel (Ire) was an impressive winner of the Hollywood Derby (G1) at Del Mar last December, then had some time off before a return that saw him run fourth in the Makers 46 Mile at Keeneland and the Turf Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs. He improved to be third in the Manhattam (G1) at Belmont, and then second behind Got Stormy in the Fourstardave Handicap (G1) at Saratoga. He is expected to sit off the pace under Joel Rosario and make a bid late in the game.
Made You Look is Brown’s second runner in the race. He was supplemented to be here to the tune of $20,000. The royally-bred son of More Than Ready has not won since May, 2018, but has only started twice this year and was fifth in the Fourstardave. He was a graded stakes winner at two and three, and was fourth on this turf course in 2017.
Got Stormy could prove a challenging foe. She has won two in a row, both at Saratoga, and defeated males impressively in the Fourstardave. Last year she won three stakes in a row, including the Ontario Colleen (G3) over this very trip. She is seven for 11 at the distance.
Synchrony is 6-1 on the morning line, and although he is typically based in the United States the six-year-old son of Tapit is coming off a grade 2 win over this trip in June in the King Edward. He has been a graded stakes winner at the Fair Grounds each of the last two seasons for trainer Michael Stidham. Flavien Prat will ship in to ride.
Awesometank (GB) is the other filly in the race. The four-year-old daughter of Intense Focus spent her entire career in England, winning five races there, before she came to America for the grade 1 Beverly D at Arlington Park in August. She ran second that day, beaten just three lengths by superstar Sistercharlie.
The Ricoh Woodbine Mile is a Win and You’re In event for the TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) at Santa Anita on November 2. It is part of a series of four stakes races on the day, including the $300,000 Northern Dancer Turf (G1), the $250,000 Canadian (G2), and the Bold Venture (G3), which features popular star Pink Lloyd. Two additional Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In events take place at Woodbine Sunday with the grade 1 Summer and Natalma Stakes for juveniles.

For good reason, much of the attention on the $4 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) will be on the international runners who come to Del Mar for the 12-furlong contest. In the last decade, just three winners have hailed from the United States, with the other seven coming from Europe. Since 2000, that split is 16 Europe, six for America.
